1979

Modest Beginnings, Great Possibilities

Katun was founded in 1979 by T. Michael Clarke and David G. Jorgensen. The company started with a workforce of 15, a few offices, a small warehouse and a limited offering of parts for office imaging equipment, as well as an aggressive entrepreneurial spirit driven by Clarke. A mission based on quality, service, and value is established. Among the customers we served in 1979 were 13 independent office equipment dealers who remain our loyal customers still today.

1980-1985

Expansion and Early Growth

By 1982, Katun had grown to more than 50 employees, prompting the company to relocate to a larger facility to meet rising demand. During this period, Katun introduced key products such as parts for LTT copiers and its first Selenium Tellurium (SeTe) drum. This innovation, along with a reputation for providing OEM-equivalent performance at lower prices, fueled the company’s growth. In 1983, Katun acquired Bedford International, a distributor of copier parts in Europe, paving the way for international expansion.

1986-1989

Lasting Partnerships Yield Amazing Progress

The late 1980s saw Katun’s growth solidify as the company opened its first international facility in the UK and a sales office in France in 1985, marking the company’s transition into a global player. Just a year later, Katun relocated to a modern headquarters to accommodate its expanding operations. Katun entered into important partnerships with companies like DuPont, to use TEFLON® coatings for fuser rollers, and Goodyear, which supported further product development. These collaborations helped Katun lead in imaging technology, ensuring high-quality products and innovative solutions for its customers.

1990-1994

New Lines of Growth

The 1990s marked a period of significant product innovation and global growth for Katun. In 1990, the company introduced its platinum alloy clad corona wire and its first amorphous silicon (a-Si) drum, both of which received strong customer approval. By 1992, Katun had opened a new European Distribution Center in the Netherlands and a manufacturing subsidiary, Minco Manufacturing, in Colorado. The company also earned the 1993 NOMDA/LANDA Environmental Award for its retrieval and refurbishment programs, underscoring its commitment to sustainability. In 1994, Katun celebrated its 15th anniversary with several key milestones, including the opening of a North American Distribution Center in Davenport, Iowa, and the acquisition of a large European competitor, which expanded Katun’s presence in the market. Katun also became the first aftermarket company to offer "patch technology" OPC drums for Sharp 2035-series digital copiers and printers.

1995-1999

Online Innovation, Expanding Markets, and Industry Recognition

The late 1990s saw Katun continue its expansion and innovation. In 1997, Katun launched its online catalog, enabling customers to easily place orders and access product information through the internet. This was a groundbreaking move that transformed the way customers interacted with the company. Katun also earned the BTA Vendor of Choice award in 1997, recognizing its status as a trusted partner in the office equipment industry. The company’s global footprint continued to grow as it opened distribution centers in Singapore, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. These new locations were part of Katun’s largest expansion to date, helping the company extend its reach into new markets worldwide. By the end of the decade, Katun had solidified its position as a global leader in the office imaging industry, with a presence in over 60 countries.

2000-2004

A Brand You Can Trust

The early 2000s were marked by strategic acquisitions, as Katun expanded its portfolio and entered new markets. The company acquired D&R Products, a player in the high-speed printer market, and EBS, a provider of fax products. These moves helped Katun gain valuable experience in the digital and high-speed printing sectors. Katun also introduced the Katun® Performance™ brand in 2003, which emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering OEM-equivalent products that provided the quality, value, and performance customers expected. During this time, Katun expanded its global presence further and received recognition for its continued growth, including the 2005 Minnesota Governor’s International Trade Award.

2005-2010

Major Product Category Breakthroughs

Between 2005 and 2009, Katun saw explosive growth in the color and printer products markets. The company introduced groundbreaking products like PXP chemical toner in 2005 and expanded its product offerings in color and laser printers. In 2009, Katun celebrated its 30th anniversary, marking three decades of industry leadership. This period also saw Katun customers print over 10 billion color pages by the end of 2010, reinforcing its position as a dominant player in the color printing space.

2011-2015

Celebrating 35 Years of Service

By 2013, the company had introduced hundreds of new products, including negative-charged color toner for Kyocera applications and trickle-feed toners for Canon and Konica Minolta machines. These innovations played a critical role in the remarkable growth that Katun experienced during this time. In 2014, Katun celebrated 35 years of providing cost-saving imaging solutions. The company expanded its KDFM program to respond to the rise of Managed Print Services, offering customers valuable solutions for their print management needs.

2016-2019

Customers Connected and Leaders Invigorated

Katun saw the appointment of Robert Moore as CEO in 2016, bringing renewed energy and leadership to the company. Under Moore’s leadership, Katun focused on continued innovation and maintained its role as a trusted industry leader. During this time, Katun strengthened its position in global markets and maintained its commitment to delivering quality, dependable products to customers worldwide. In 2018, Katun was acquired by General Plastic Industrial Co. (GPI), a well-respected industry leader in toner cartridge manufacturing. This acquisition significantly enhanced Katun’s manufacturing capabilities and provided new resources for continued product innovation. In 2019, Katun celebrated its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of leadership in the imaging industry. The company also introduced the Katun Business Ink brand, further expanding its product offerings and solidifying its reputation as a versatile supplier across multiple platforms.

2020-Today

Adapting to Global Challenges and Innovating for the Future

In the 2020s, Katun faced global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and disruptions to the supply chain. Despite these challenges, the company adapted quickly, helping customers navigate supply shortages and profitability concerns. In 2022, Katun moved to new headquarters in Minneapolis and opened a new, more efficient European Distribution Center in the Netherlands. The company also built a state-of-the-art R&D facility in Taiwan, reinforcing its commitment to innovation. In 2024, Katun marked a significant milestone with the opening of its Asia Operational Headquarters and Innovation Hub in Taiwan, showcasing cutting-edge research and development capabilities. This year also saw the launch of a refreshed brand strategy under the new CEO, Kuoying Wang, and the introduction of the Arivia line of MFPs, designed to meet the needs of modern, secure, and efficient office workflows.
